My good friend Jennifer Sage of Viva Travels sent me this today and I had been longing to take a cycling vacation so badly that I thought I would share this with you. Not that I have time to do anything that takes me away from KGS Bikes this year, but I do hope to live vicariously through friends like you. Jennifer’s letter begins below:
Dear Vail Valley (and some Aspen/front range) cyclists,
I¹d like to invite you to take part in a very important, epic cycling event. One that will be etched on your memory for as long as you live. One that, just by committing to it, takes your focus and passion and drive to the next level. (That’s what just happened to me; it’s quite amazing).
Join us at the “Giretto“, the “Little Giro”! Last week I made the commitment to do it, and I’m seeking fellow cyclists to join us. We will ride the first 5 days of the Giro d’Italia! It’s not a “tour”, it’s not sight-seeing it’s the real thing! Ride the stage route in full in advance of the riders. It’s not expensive and of course, we’ll take anyone who’s interested, but I’d love to see a lot of women doing this ride.
We just got the Giretto qualified as a Livestrong event so riders must raise money for Lance Armstrong’s foundation.
We need more riders! It’s only 7 weeks from now, so there’s lots of focused training to do (I can even help with a training plan). Please share this with every cyclist you know. I am also looking for local riders to train with in the next 2 months. A lot of the training is indoors, but I need to get to lower elevations to ride on the road. Anyone interested?
The primary goal is fighting cancer of course, but there are many secondary goals. Rather than tell you about them here, you can read more on the website. (Click on Riders for info on those of us already signed up so far we are 5 and looking for a total of 10).
Our plan is to grow this into an annual event, growing in size and importance every year. It’s pretty significant, however, to be involved in the inaugural event. You’ll get lots of press and attention! (BTW, our hope is to connect with Lance at the Giro this year!)
Costs will be minimal – each participant pays their own way and part of the expenses. Costs will be only $1,500 – $2,200 including transportation IF you get some of the cheaper flights they are advertising now. (Even cheaper if you can use miles)
Two bike tour companies are donating their services my own company, Viva Travels, and Cycling Made in Italy (who are onsite in Italy).
PR for this event is growing exponentially. We will do PR on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, but we need local cyclists to help spread the word, by emailing this to all your friends. I hope to be on KZYR this week, and in the local papers. Roadbikerider.com will post it and we should be interviewed on The Fredcast as well (a great cycling podcast).
If you have no way of training for this event (even if you were to only ride 3 or 4 of the stages?), perhaps you can see your way to supporting me on my ride. I would be eternally grateful! I’ll be blogging about my training for 400+ miles in only 8 weeks
Ciao!
Jennifer Sage
