How safe is bicycling, really?

I was checking out my friends at the eco velo blog and found this great post about the relative safety of cycling.

Please read the whole article but here is the chart which I found most interesting:

Following is a list compiled by Failure Analysis Associates, Inc. (Design News, 10-4-93) comparing the fatal risk associated with participating in various activities:

Skydiving 128.71
General Aviation 15.58
On-road Motorcycling 8.80
Scuba Diving 1.98
Living (all causes of death) 1.53
Swimming 1.07
Snowmobiling .88
Automobile Driving .47
Water Skiing .28
Bicycling .26
Flying (domestic airlines) .15
Hunting .08

At the end of the day, cycling is almost twice as safe as driving your car, and the real culprit, in my opinion is fear of the unknown and lack of training. I am most interested in your thoughts on the matter.

So what you’re saying is that if I go hunting I’ll be safer than if I don’t go hunting?
