On the road to mediocrity, from Seth’s Blog

I subscribe to Seth Godin’s blog and often get pearls of wisdom. His short entry today described my place in the bicycle retail biz, fighting mediocrity, as well as how all of us succumb at one time or another.

On the road to mediocrity
Along the way, we settle.
We settle for something not quite right, or an outfit that isn’t our best look, or a job that doesn’t quite maximize our talents. We settle for relationships that don’t give us joy, or a website that’s, “good enough.”
The only way to get mediocre is one step at a time.
You don’t have to settle. It’s a choice you get to make every day.

I really believe this. What do you think?

I think the point is that we pick our battles, most often accepting mediocrity is just a battle not worth fighting. The trick is to decide which battles to fight, and when to just succumb to banality.

Some people won’t give up and allow small battles destroy them, others become successful by picking the right battles and turning them into successes.

So, I guess that means I should get you to do that bike fit for me, its worth it this year I think… What do you think?

Hi Mark, Great to hear from you. I very much agree that we pick our battles. I for one only focus on folks that I can help, who know that my perspective is that they are more important than the bike and with that relationship change comes letting go of some preconceptions and getting new options as well. I made an active choice to only focus on finding a position that works with an individual rider and that impeaches most bikes, and while I am thankful that most folks can ride those bikes, I am more thankful that as we age, more people are finding that I have a system that works better for them.

Come visit sometime! You are always welcome here.

Best,

Kevin
