 Perfectly Fit!

The newsletter for active cycling lifestyles

Volume 2, Issue 3 / ISSN 1945-1776

A Note from Kevin

Kevin portraitWelcome to “Perfectly Fit,” our newsletter which is designed to help you get the most out of an active, cycling lifestyle. I have a team of pros from all over the world that will help me provide you with great info and a place for you to find out what you want to know. Your feedback is so important and we will make a place for you to be heard.

In our main article today I discuss the latest goings on with Tacx and their Fortius Multiplayer Virtual Reality trainer. Every year it is improved and your workout is the beneficiary.

Our BikeTech Help Desk has two questions. The first explains why you should never take your bike to a carwash and the second discusses the best and worst things you can put on your chain.

Don’t forget to visit our blog as new stuff is posted there almost daily. It is easy to subscribe to the blog so you can get updates sent to you.

Thanks again for letting me share with you a little about cycling. I respect your time and will strive to continue to make it worth it.

Upcoming Events

I am in Austin up to four days a week now and can meet at the River Place Country Club to define your new custom bike or at a place of your choosing. We make house calls! I also have some clinics and other events in the works and will share that info soon. Don’t forget to send me invitations if you want me to come to your event. I am able to put together a very nice talk, clinic or even a custom bicycle event. Since expanding into Austin I now am suggesting that Dallasites consider meeting me in Austin to consult about custom bikes. In polling the audience, people seem to have no problem driving to Austin from Dallas for a day trip, while San Antonio is a little far. I have not forsaken the fine folks in Dallas but am stretching myself too far to be in three places at once. Thanks for understanding and you will have a great experience in either Austin or San Antonio. As I wrote in my article this issue, a little extra effort on the front end pays big dividends later when you consider custom bikes.

Comments

I have had so many positive comments lately about the new website, the blog, and the KGS experience I would have a long list indeed. We work for you and want to make cycling your Fountain of Youth! Keep those comments, questions and challenges coming. Thank you so much for your appreciation of our work.

Feature Article – What’s up with the New Tacx VR Trainers?

Google Earth training with at Tacx Fortius Multiplayer VR TrainerThe past two weeks have shown me that Fall is in the air, because people are calling about trainers! The Tacx Fortius Multiplayer is my trainer of choice because of a couple of key points, Virtual Reality for one, and the Motor Brake for two. Trainers can be awfully boring and that incessant load on your knees is not fun after awhile.

Some of my triathletes friends have done five hour trainer rides and to me, that deserves a Congressional Medal of Honor. Having video and virtual reality really helps with motivation and with reduction of boredom. Tacx has new software this year that allows you to download a course saved to Google Earth and ride it on your trainer. This means all the rides you find on MapMyRide or those you save to your Garmin GPS can be uploaded to Google Earth and then downloaded to your trainer. This also means that elevations will work and the trainer will adjust the resistance based on whether you are climbing or descending.

I have written a few articles on the way that a VR trainer can really help add value to your cycling. Since your bike fits you better than a spin bike, or should, it makes a great stationary trainer. So many people have home theaters or flat screen TV’s now, that the ability to turn that space into a personal training studio and get the imagery of the trainer on the big screen is very cool.

Here is what you need to make this happen. First, get a Fortius Multiplayer trainer. They are around $1,950, with the steering frame and the new Trainer software. You will want two accessories, a trainer mat to protect the floor and a sweat cover to protect the bike. Add a fan like this one and a computer that hooks up to the flat screen and you have a custom bicycle training studio that is world class. I can help in all these areas, even in sourcing and installing a computer!

The only “gotcha” that I know of right now is the software only works on Windows Vista and XP in 32 bit mode. Many new computers are coming with 64 bit operating systems and the trainer software version 2 is due to release in November, solving that problem.

Many people have asked me to compare the Tacx to the Computrainer which is the other big player in this market. The Computrainer software is nice, but it doesn’t have the Motor Brake and the trainer itself is long overdue for a makeover. The Tacx is much easier to use and your bike is able to be mounted or dismounted from the trainer in a jiffy. The trainer itself is much better made and the steering frame makes the ride more comfortable.

At the end of the day, please consider some way to keep that fitness you worked so hard to develop this summer. The darkness, rain and coolness will sap even the most dedicated athlete’s motivation at some point and this is a really cool way to train no matter what happens outside.

Until next time,

BikeTech Help Desk

Hi Kevin, Keep bicycles away from here!

I just finished the MS-150 and rode in the rain. My bike is nasty! It has this oily stuff all over it and with the mud and gritty stuff I was thinking I should take it to the carwash. Is this a good idea?

Lisa

Hi Lisa,

Stop! Please don’t go to the car wash. There are grease seals on the bearings of your bike but they can’t handle the water pressure. What you will do is to force that nasty stuff into the bearings. It will be a very costly mistake.

You need to either take the bike to your bike shop for cleaning or learn how to properly wash the bike yourself. Here is an article I wrote on the steps to properly clean your bike. The only thing that is a little out of date is I use Dumonde Tech lube now or Purple Extreme. Both are the best I have seen. Look at the next question regarding lubes.

Kevin

———-WD40 is not for chains!

Hi Kevin,

I see so many types of chain lube at bike shops. I have also read that WD40 is best. What do you use at KGS Bikes?

Ken

Hi Ken,

Chain lube discussions can approach the level of politics and religion for differences of opinion and strongly held beliefs. While we use either Dumonde Tech or Purple Extreme here we also think ProGold is a good lube.

First, WD40 is not a chain lube, but a solvent. It also is a spray, meaning stuff gets sprayed all over your bike. Please don’t use WD40 as a chain lube! Second, I don’t like the wax based lubes like White Lightning on chains because the lube doesn’t stay in between the plates where it is needed. I like White Lightning on Speedplay cleats, though.

ProGold is a fine lube but I think Purple Extreme is a little better. We have used both for many years. My current favorite, however, is Dumonde Tech because I think it works even better, plus you apply it before a ride, and all the others require you to apply it after the ride and let it sit overnight. When I get done with a ride I am done.

It really boils down to personal preference and if you prefer to apply after a ride, go with the Purple Extreme. If before, go with Dumonde Tech. You can’t go wrong. Make sure every link is lubed on the inner and outer plates with either product. Wipe off the excess and you are in business!
